Chelan PUD Mosquito Control Coming to Horan Natural Area
Chelan PUD Parks and State Fish and Wildlife crews will apply pellets to control mosquitoes in and around the ponds of the Horan Natural Area starting Monday, Aug. 8. Plans are to treat about five acres of the 100-acre natural area. PUD Parks Superintendent Ryan Baker said staff plans two more applications, about 30 days apart, depending on water level in the ponds.
This is the fourth year Chelan PUD has used the larvacide, known by the brand name VectoLex CG, to control mosquitoes in the natural area. The pellets are safe for use around people and pets, Baker said. Sampling for mosquito larvae began in late May. Samples taken last week showed larvae present, the threshold for starting treatment. Ten days’ notice is required to begin treatment. Baker said signs will be posted along the trail through the natural area and information posted on the PUD’s website.
